Patch looks good, however not trivial to review, you are refactoring 1
big function into 13 (or 14) ones, it would be much simpler to review if
you use 1 patch per function extracted. If you mind and that is not too
much effort, that would be appreciated. If you prefer not, I'll review
your patch more carefully.
